From Feudal Stronghold to Ruin to Restoration

Vianden Castle's scale once rivaled the great feudal fortresses of medieval Europe, but 19th-century sale and partial demolition left it in genuine ruin by the time Victor Hugo visited and sketched it during his period of exile here. A long, methodical restoration effort, largely completed across the 20th century, returned the castle to something close to its historic grandeur, making it one of the most complete restored medieval castles in Europe today.
