The City in Chagall's Paintings

A Hometown That Never Left His Work

Marc Chagall left Vitebsk for Paris as a young man, but the city's wooden rooftops, fiddlers and church domes kept reappearing in his paintings for decades afterward, blending memory and fantasy into some of the most recognizable imagery in 20th-century art. Walking Vitebsk's old streets today, it's easy to see exactly which rooftops he was painting from.
